2023: The year climate change got (even more) real

It's been a big year for us. We've seen a lot of change as an agency over the past 12 months, and writing a round-up post to reflect on all that's happened doesn't feel like it quite does it justice.
At the bedrock of everything we do as an agency, sits the desire to minimise the negative — and build on the positive — impact we collectively have on our world and the people on it. When we launched Ubuntu Studio 18 months ago, we set out to do things differently: to help brands both big and small to communicate the stories of change, champion a shift for a better and brighter planet, and share their stories with customers and stakeholders.
Over the course of this year, we've seen yet more UK prime ministers come and go; fracking be banned, reinstated, and banned again; COP27 achieved some incremental, albeit marginal, wins; a greater push for land, air, and sea conservation around the world... all alongside the introduction of carbon tariffs, taxes on private jets, improved carbon capture technology, and energy from renewables outstripping coal for the first time. It's been remarkable to see, and most importantly, there's momentum.
At Ubuntu HQ, we've had the pleasure of working with some truly ingenious and innovative brands that are redefining our tomorrow — from electrification of entire cities and infrastructure in the US (ElectroTempo), to building the fundamentals of the circular economy into the eCommerce space (FloorFound), to launching sustainable fashion brands to challenge the world of fast fashion (Public Habit).

But even as a small agency, we've had to contend with the constant challenge of 'greenwashing' — the sharing of misleading information that conceals abuse of the environment to promote a positive public image. That's meant we've had to turn down work that would have helped us to grow, in favour of staying true to our core beliefs and values as a business. That's no small thing when you're small and every penny counts. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have a firm belief that as a species, we've made critical strides in combating the biggest issue we've ever faced: climate change. However, we still have a long way to go. In order to address some of the most critical challenges posed by this crisis, we need to fundamentally rethink the way we live, behave and organise. This means challenging the dominant ideologies that provide us our luxuries and comforts, but that place profit and economic growth above all else, promoting a culture of individualism and consumerism over collectivism and equality.
My hope for 2023 is that we begin to make the much-needed shift in focus — fundamentally transforming our systems to ones that are more sustainable, equitable, and that focus instead on the well-being of people and the planet over short-term economic gain. If Ubuntu can be a small part of that, then I believe we'll have succeeded as a company and as change makers.
Here's to an even brighter year ahead.
