We 💛 Riri

Rihanna, the Barbadian singer, songwriter, actress, fashion designer, makeup mogul and businesswoman (deep breath) has announced that she’ll be donating $15 million via her Clara Lionel foundation to 18 climate justice organisations in the Caribbean and North America. Those selected include Climate Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network, and the Movement for Black Lives.

The multi-talented (and recently appointed billionaire) entrepreneur said: “Climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of colour and island nations facing the brunt of climate change.”

We still find it hard to justify the existence of billionaires, but it looks like Ms Fenty is using her wealth in the best way possible!

Fly Alice, fly!

You heard it here first, the world’s first electric plane is preparing for flight! The Alice, a plane developed by Eviation, passed its highly scrutinised engine testing last week with flying colours at Arlington Municipal Airport, north of Seattle.

According to Eviation’s CEO Omer Bar-Yohay, the Alice is just weeks away from its first official flight. Boasting battery tech similar to that of an electric car and requiring only 30 minutes of charging, the nine-passenger Alice will be able to fly for around an hour and cover about 440 nautical miles.

As we all feel a twinge of guilt when we board a commercial jet, this feels like yet another positive step on the path to electrifying public transport and wean ourselves off the gas-guzzlers we’ve become so dependent on.

Solar breakthrough

A radical solar breakthrough by a bunch of Swedish scientists could enable us to store energy for up to 18 years! The entrepreneurs designed a microchip that stores solar energy in liquid, successfully shipped the chip to China where it was converted into electricity.

The solar breakthrough is critical as it has the potential to revolutionise solar energy storage. Up until now, one of the main challenges with the green energy solution has been finding an efficient and effective way to store it. Theoretically, scientists can now produce solar energy regardless of the weather, time of day, and geographical location—excellent news for renewable energy fans!
