Firefighting goats

Goats are helping to prevent wildfires in California.

Every year, around 400 goats are used to help clear out long grass and weeds in hard to reach areas in West Sacramento, which when dry can be fuel for wildfires. This is a much more eco-friendly option compared to using traditional mowers and tractors, and is also a lot less noisy! Goats are also perfectly suited to this job, as they are able to traverse elevated terrain which machines cannot.

Most wildfires in the USA are caused by human activities, and overgrown grass and weeds can make them even worse. Goats play a huge part in Sacramento’s wildfire suppression programme, and, let’s face it, they’re adorable!

The sun shines on solar

It’s official: there are now enough solar panels across the world to power the whole of Europe! That’s a whopping 1 terawatt of electricity that can be generated directly from the sun. Solar power supply in the European Union rose to a record high during June and July 2021, accounting for 10% of total electricity produced in the region, a report by independent climate think-tank Ember said on Wednesday.

And with energy bills getting pretty crazy in the UK, homeowners are likely to look to other methods like solar to try and ease financial pressures. The latest change to the regulator’s cap on default tariffs means, from spring, the average annual dual-fuel bill will go up to £1,971. That’s an increase of 54% on current levels. It’s great to see that renewable energy is really on the up—long may it continue!

Bisons bounce back

In the past decade, the European bison (Bison bonasus for those budding David Attenborough’s out there) has made a comeback in Central and Eastern Europe. Hunters had killed the last known bison in the region nearly a century ago, but thanks to reintroduction programs in Belarus, Poland, Russia and Romania, nearly four times as many bison are alive today than 2003. The increase, to some 7,000 animals, was enough to prompt the IUCN to downgrade the European bison’s conservation status from vulnerable to near threatened in 2020.

There’s nothing we love more than animal species bouncing back thanks to conservation efforts. Unless your Simba in The Lion King perhaps…
