Hello to all of our lovely readers! We can’t believe it’s nearly been six months since we started PNR. It’s sparked many conversations and thoughts in our office each week, and we hope you’ve found it just as interesting and enlightening.

As always, you can rely on us to brighten up your Friday with some positive eco news — so let’s get started!

Mangrove madness

Since 2007, reforestation company Ecologi have been working tirelessly with their planting partner Eden Reforestation Projects to plant trees in Madagascar. The initiative was designed to help re-forest the island and has so far seen a staggering 664 million trees planted—a number that we can’t quite wrap our heads around.

So why is this important? Well, a seemingly everyday mangrove forest can store four times as much carbon as a tropical rainforest, and provides a crucial ecosystem and safe habitat for tropical fish, helps with the cycling of vital nutrients, and is also highly-effective as coastal storm protection for local land.

Ecologi are only getting started however, and are no doubt going to continue to provide climate-critical support in the fight against climate change. Check-out the before and after pictures to see the sheer amount of trees that have been planted in the past 15 years and the visual effect it has had on the landscape!

Miners withdrawal

In somewhat of an incredible u-turn, some of the world’s biggest mining companies have withdrawn requests to research and extract minerals on Indigenous land in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, and have repudiated Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s efforts to legalize mining activity in the areas.

The Brazilian Mining Association, which represents about 130 companies, conducted an internal survey of its members earlier this year, according to its president, Raul Jungmann, to gain their input on future activities. For the first time in decades, none of the companies has renewed or submitted research or mining applications for gold, tin, nickel, iron or other ores in Indigenous areas.

Things don’t look great for presidential incumbent Bolsonaro, either. His leftwing opponent Lula currently holds a double digit lead over him in the election polls coming up in Brazil. Lula has a checkered past, but also has some interesting environmental policies that he’s pledging will turn a nation renowned for its deforestation on its head.

Let’s see what happens when Brazilians turn out to vote in October later this year.

New Aussie administration

On a political note, Australia’s new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is set to create a new mega-department of climate change, energy, environment and water to drive the new Labor government’s policy agenda.

Australia was recently found to have the highest coal count per capita in the world, so a transition to green energy would make a huge difference in global emissions.

Albanese’s approach to climate change is a refreshing change from his predecessor, who infamously mocked the idea of climate change in parliament, and told his MPs “not to be afraid of it”.

Whether a lot of progress will be made with the creation of this new department has yet to be seen, but we’re hopeful!
Well, that’s everything from us today, we’re sorry the puns weren’t up to scratch today! Have a great weekend everyone and (if it stops raining) try to go outside! Be sure to follow our socials so you know when the next PNR comes out (every Friday).

Got an interesting story you’d like us to highlight? Feel free to send in your ideas to callum@ubuntustudio.co.uk and you could be featured in an upcoming PNR!
