Happy Friday readers! As usual, we’ve got some wonderful positive news stories to share with you as you head into the weekend, so let’s get straight into it.
Thanks, Captain
The world’s fastest electric ship will soon navigate the archipelago surrounding Sweden’s capital in a bid to make water-borne public transport more attractive.
The Candela P-12 Shuttle will begin operating in Stockholm next year with the team behind the build claiming the vessel to be not only the fastest of its kind with a speed of 30 knots, but also the most energy-efficient electric ship ever.
It’s hoped it will make marine public transport in the city more attractive than trains, buses and cars. The water-borne shuttle has three carbon-fibre wings that extend from under the hull, allowing the ship to lift itself above the water, decreasing drag and increasing speed and stability. Fancy!

A dam good defence
Eurasian beavers are set to enjoy legal protection in England, following an announcement from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
Beavers are vital in helping improve the natural function of wetlands and reducing the effects of water flow during flooding, as well as being important for many ecological ecosystems. They also help land retain fresh water during heatwaves.
New legislation, due to come into force at the beginning of October, will make it an offence to deliberately capture, kill, disturb, or injure beavers, or damage their breeding sites or resting places without holding the appropriate licence.
This is a huge step forward for the charming rodents, which were hunted to extinction in the country 400 years ago but have—ironically—reappeared owing to illegal releases around the country.

The sniff test
Waitrose has become the latest UK supermarket to scrap best before dates on hundreds of products.
The supermarket chain will be removing the information from labels of 500 products from September in a bid to reduce food waste. The high-end grocery store isn’t the first to make the move, as multiple other supermarkets, including Tesco and Co-Op, have done the same in recent weeks.
Director of Sustainability and Ethics at John Lewis Partnership, Marija Rompani, said that with 4.5 million tonnes of edible food being thrown away by households every year, the energy and resources of food production is being wasted.
For example, milk is the UK’s third most wasted food and drink item after potatoes and bread, according to WRAP. Yet it has the biggest carbon footprint out of the three because of the resources needed to produce it.
