Bubbling breakthrough

In a strange turn of events, companies are turning to bubbles (of all things) to keep waterways clean.

Dutch inventors have created the Great Bubble Barrier: A simple device that channels rubbish—especially small pieces of plastic—to the side of water courses where they can be retrieved and processed for recycling.

The system works by pumping air through an underwater tube, which creates a wall of bubbles to push rubbish to the surface. The inventors have confirmed it’s safe for fish to swim through, oxygenates the water, and is applicable to a wide variety of locations.

The question we’re asking, is whether they can build a bigger version for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Swiss shut-down

Switzerland’s biggest city Zurich is shutting down its natural gas network in whole sections of the city to fight climate change—and save money at the same time.

Zurich started the plan a decade ago as part of its environmental strategy, and is encouraging its residents to install alternatives to natural gas heating as the city-owned utility company shuts down gas supply networks.

Alternative heat sources have already been popular in parts of the city for decades. This includes “distance heating” which uses excess heat from waste incinerators to warm water that is then pumped to homes through pipes.

As the fight for climate change becomes ever more pressing, it’s great to see larger cities making changes that others can learn from. Let's see if the rest of Switzerland follows suit.

Paradise park

In place of a 2,000 mile wall, a bi-national river park is planned to be built on the border between Mexico and the USA! The park, which will connect Laredo with the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo across the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo, will recreate the river’s ecosystem and boost the economy of both banks. It will also create public art and is expected to attract a wealth of additional tourists.

The binational river park will also serve as a connector between the various cultural and natural destinations on both sides of the border. This is a far cry from what we originally thought might happen to the border a few years ago, so we’re naturally very happy to see it!

That’s all from us today! We’ll be back again next Friday with more positive news.
