Hello there readers! We hope you’ve all had a wonderful week and are enjoying the patchy English summer weather. Let’s get straight into the positive eco news from the past few weeks…

Coral protection

A new study has found that mangroves and coral reefs can be cost-effective ways to reduce coastal flooding.

Mangroves provide habitat for fish species and serve as a natural barrier against the effects of climate change as their roots can stop erosion and retain sediments. Researchers identified Cuba and Jamaica as places having the most significant cost-effective opportunities for reef restoration.

Hopefully, this leads to more investment in the protection of mangroves and coral reefs, as we all know governments love “cost-effective” solutions. They’re certainly going to need it as corals in particular are suffering due to increased sea temperatures due to climate change.

After all these years

A giant tortoise species that was believed to be extinct for more than a century is, in fact, still alive!

Scientists assumed that the chelonoidis phantasticus had died out more than a century ago. The species is better known as the ‘fantastic giant tortoise’ and is native to the Galápagos Fernandina island.

Giant tortoises can weigh as much as 417 kg and can grow up to 1.3m. They usually live for between 80 and 120 years. There are, in fact, 14 different species of giant Galápagos tortoise, and all are listed on the IUCN Red List as either vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered or extinct.

This is a pretty simple one, but who doesn’t love tortoises?! Hopefully, the tortoises will be able to bounce back with some support from the locals and we can add a species back onto the list of rapidly depleting wildlife.

The golden ticket

In an effort to aid its people during the current cost of living crisis and bolster the use of public transport, Germany is offering its citizens a highly discounted travel card that will allow them to take as many buses and trains as they like one month.

The 9-Euro ticket (£7.78 GBP) is available from 1 June 2022 to 31 August 2022, and will allow its holder to travel as many times as they want across all forms of public transport across the country, including buses, U-Bahns, S-Bahns, trams, and local and regional trains for one calendar month.

This is another example of great public sector spending by the German government. Public transport in the UK is heavily underfunded and underutilised, with the bulk of costs falling on consumers. As politicians increasingly talk about the need for less reliance on ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles and more on locally sourced transportation networks, we’d love to see money being spent on more valuable services—and even something similar to this happening in Britain too.
